Sound is a wave. The body is a medium that carries it.
Sound is a pattern of pressure moving through air, water, tissue and bone. Because we are largely water and deeply rhythmic — heartbeat, breath, the firing of nerves — the body doesn't only hear sound; it conducts it.
And the body is never fixed. Everything alive moves in rhythms that rise and fall. So the Science of Sound is really the study of one thing: how sound meets those rhythms — and what happens in the pause between them.
THE HEART OF IT
The still point

Watch any rhythm closely — a wave, a breath, a pulse — and you'll find the moment where it turns: where rising becomes falling, where motion pauses before it changes direction. That hinge is the still point. It's brief, easy to miss, and it's where change happens.
In sound work, this is the centre of everything. When we listen to a tuning fork, slow the breath, or hum, the nervous system is drawn toward that quiet turn — and from there it settles into a calmer pattern. Everything else on this page is really the still point, showing up where you can see or measure it.
To change, a system first grows quiet. The still point is that quiet.

01 · IN THE BODY
The pause in the nervous system
Your autonomic nervous system has two gears — the sympathetic accelerator that keeps you alert, and the parasympathetic brake that calms and restores. Health isn't living in one gear; it's the freedom to move between them. And to shift, the system slips briefly into neutral — a still point — before settling into a new balance.
Sound is one gentle way to invite that shift. The breath slows, the body softens, attention turns inward. That felt pause is the still point — the moment sound becomes something you experience in your own body.


02 · IN THE CELL
The pulse inside the cell
Our cells release nitric oxide — a signalling gas whose discovery won the 1998 Nobel Prize in Medicine — not in a steady stream, but in a wave that rises and falls. Between the two is a pause: the same still-point shape, at the scale of a single cell.

THE STILL POINT MADE VISABLE
Cymatics
Scatter fine sand on a metal plate and draw a single tone across it, and the grains leap into shifting, symmetrical patterns. Look closely and you'll see the places where the sand goes completely still — the nodes. Those motionless lines are the still point, made visible. It doesn't prove that sound heals — it shows, unforgettably, that even inside motion there are points of perfect stillness.

HONESTLY
What we can say — and what we can't
There's genuine physics beneath the old idea that “everything vibrates.” Every atom is in constant motion, nothing in the universe is truly still, and every object has a frequency at which it naturally resonates. That much is measured and real. Where it turns from science into philosophy is the leap that vibration is a single force we can tune to heal or transform at will. Both matter here — and teaching this well means keeping them honestly labelled.

Measured effects
Sound and vibration measurably affect the nervous system, heart-rate variability and the relaxation response. Slow breathing and humming shift the body toward calm — and humming sharply raises nasal nitric oxide.
PROMISING - EMERGING
Emerging support
Growing research suggests benefits for stress, pain and wellbeing — and the tuning-fork link to nitric oxide sits here too: encouraging, but early or in need of replication. Promising, not proven.
EXPLORATION - STORY
Story & tradition
Much of sound's cultural meaning — energy fields, cosmic tones, "raising vibration" — belongs to philosophy and lived experience. We honour it as story, and never dress it up as evidence.
